PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy for Joints

#method

Joint PRP therapy is a modern treatment method that helps relieve symptoms in many musculoskeletal conditions, reduces pain intensity, and restores joint mobility. The procedure is safe because the biological material used for treatment is obtained from the patient’s own blood. It is well tolerated, does not cause rejection, and rarely leads to side effects.

Mashtaler Ortho&Trauma Clinic provides PRP therapy for joints for conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendinitis, chronic inflammation, and injuries. This innovative technique helps reduce inflammation and stimulate tissue regeneration without surgery.

PRP injection into the knee joint can accelerate tissue repair.

What is PRP therapy and how does it affect the joints?

PRP therapy for joints involves the use of the patient’s own blood plasma enriched with platelets (Platelet-Rich Plasma). During the procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn from a vein and processed using centrifugation. This process separates a plasma fraction with a high concentration of platelets containing numerous growth factors.

These growth factors stimulate the repair of damaged tissues, improve blood circulation in the affected area, and reduce inflammation.

The prepared plasma is then injected directly into the joint. This approach is used in the treatment of various musculoskeletal conditions, including:

PRP injections activate the body’s natural healing processes and accelerate tissue recovery without surgery, aggressive medications, or painful procedures.

When is joint PRP therapy recommended?

Our clinic offers PRP therapy in Lviv for patients with the following symptoms:

PRP therapy is also recommended for patients who have contraindications to surgery. In addition, this regenerative medicine method is often used to support rehabilitation after surgical procedures.

Contraindications for PRP therapy

Although PRP therapy is considered one of the safest treatment methods in traumatology and orthopedics, it still has certain contraindications.

The procedure is not performed in the following cases:

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the procedure may be performed only according to individual indications, after careful evaluation of potential benefits and risks.

Advantages of PRP therapy for joints

  1. Low risk of allergic reactions — since the patient’s own biological material is used.
  2. High effectiveness — PRP injections into the knee joint often lead to noticeable improvement even after the first session.
  3. Minimal contraindications — the procedure does not involve steroids or potent medications.
  4. Short procedure time — plasma preparation and injection typically take about 15–20 minutes.
  5. Possibility of repeated treatment — a treatment course usually consists of several sessions to achieve a long-lasting effect.

How to prepare for the procedure

The most important step is a consultation with a doctor. The physician will select an individual treatment plan and explain any preparation requirements. Typically, these include:

To rule out contraindications, the doctor may recommend a complete blood count and a coagulation test (coagulogram).

How is PRP injected into the joint?

  1. A small amount of blood (about 15–20 ml) is drawn from a vein.
  2. The blood is processed in a centrifuge to isolate platelets and growth factors.
  3. The prepared plasma is injected into the joint under ultrasound guidance.

The duration of the injection itself depends on the treated joint. For example, PRP therapy of the knee joint usually takes about 4–5 minutes.

Immediately after the procedure, patients can usually return to their normal daily activities. If temporary movement restrictions are necessary, the doctor will provide appropriate recommendations.

How many PRP sessions are needed?

The number of procedures depends on the diagnosis and the condition of the joint. Typically, orthopedic specialists recommend a course of 3–5 injections with an interval of 7–10 days.

Pain reduction and improved mobility are often noticeable after the first session. A stable therapeutic effect usually develops within 2–3 months.
