Ligaments are strong fibers that connect bones together. The anterior cruciate ligament is one of two ligaments that cross at the center of the knee and connect the femur to the tibia. The anterior cruciate ligament is the main stabilizer of the knee joint. Injuries leading to its rupture provoke further instability of the knee.

Already after the first procedure, there is a noticeable reduction in pain.

Knee arthroplasty

#method

Endoprosthetics of the knee joint is an operation that helps restore mobility in severe pathologies. This is an effective solution against pain and stiffness in critical cases when other treatments do not help.

Mashtaler Ortho&Trauma Clinic performs knee replacement surgery in Lviv. We use modern implants, perform the procedure in the operating room of the highest level of sterility and accompany patients until complete recovery.

Knee endoprosthesis is a reliable method to get rid of pain and restore mobility

Endoprosthetics of the knee joint is an operation that involves the replacement of destroyed tissues with artificial implants. This surgical intervention allows you to relieve pain and restore mobility. After it, the patient can walk, climb stairs, do household chores and even play sports, subject to certain restrictions.

Modern endoprostheses are made of safe materials that take root well in the body. These are titanium, ceramics and innovative composites. They serve up to 15—20 years, withstand very heavy loads and do not cause allergic reactions in the vast majority of people.

Indications for endoprosthetics of the knee joint

Before the operation, it is imperative to consult an orthopedic surgeon. This allows you to objectively assess the need for surgery and choose the optimal method of treatment.

During the consultation, the doctor also calculates the price of knee endoprosthetics for the individual case.

What symptoms determine the need to replace the knee joint?

How the knee is diagnosed

Surgery is performed for degenerative changes in cartilage tissue, which sometimes even affect bone tissue. Therefore, before performing the operation, it is important to assess the degree of damage. For this, the following diagnostic methods are used:

Contraindications to knee replacement

Replacement of the knee joint is the most effective method of treatment with a strong progression of the disease. And yet there are cases when doctors advise to abandon the operation and choose conservative therapy:

A relative contraindication would be a low level of physical activity - especially in the presence of excess weight. The prosthesis wears out faster in such conditions, subjected to heavy loads.

In modern orthopedics and traumatology, conservative methods of treatment or joint-sparing procedures are often selected for patients under 65 years of age, which aim to eliminate pain and slow the development of the disease. If there is an opportunity to do without surgery, we make every effort to preserve the patient's own joint.

The most common option is complete replacement of the knee joint. This operation involves replacing the contact surfaces of the femur and tibia in the knee joint on both sides - medial and lateral. It is indicated for generalized arthrosis, when cartilage tissue is destroyed in all parts of the knee.

If only one department is affected, it can be usedpartial replacement of the joint. In it, only damaged tissues from the side of the lesion are replaced, and healthy ones are not removed. It is a less traumatic method that is often chosen in localized arthrosis or in the treatment of patients under 65 years of age.

How is the operation to replace the knee joint with an artificial one?

Knee endoprosthesis is a complex operation that requires highly qualified surgeon. It involves appropriate training, observation and rehabilitation. We tell you more about its main stages.

Preparation for joint replacement surgery

After the decision to install a knee prosthesis, the patient must undergo a comprehensive examination. It assumes:

The patient receives recommendations on nutrition and medication. Before surgery, you must stop taking anticoagulants and some other drugs that affect blood clotting. 8 hours before surgery, you should refrain from eating.

Depending on the patient's condition, the surgeon can choose different types of implants and methods of surgical intervention. This determines the price of knee endoprosthetics, the length of hospital stay and rehabilitation techniques.

The main steps in the operation

  1. Anesthesia is used. In most cases, it is a combination of regional anesthesia (numbness of the operated limb) and sedation - during the operation, the patient sleeps, which avoids pain and discomfort.
  2. The surgeon makes an incision to reach the damaged joint. It removes tissues that have undergone degenerative changes and prepares the bones for the attachment of an artificial implant. After that, an endoprosthesis is installed. The whole operation lasts about two hours.
  3. After making sure of the functionality of the artificial joint, the specialist sutures the wound and applies bandages. After the operation is completed, the patient remains in the hospital under the supervision of medical personnel.

What complications are possible?

Endoprosthetics is a common surgery well known in traumatology. With the right approach, the likelihood of complications is minimal. And yet the risks always exist. Among them should be mentioned:

Doctors at Mashtaler Ortho&Trauma follow the protocols for the prevention of complications. Our specialists carry out preliminary examinations, select safe and effective drugs for anesthesia, and ensure complete sterility during surgery.

Rehabilitation after knee endoprosthesis

It is important to understand that each organism is individual. Therefore, the duration of recovery may vary in each patient. We talk about the main steps and typical time intervals within the framework of rehabilitation.
